Post Who should pay the caregiver/patient fee?
on: July 12, 2011, 08:13

I wanted to throw this question out to the community: Who should pay the caregiver license fee? The patient or caregiver?

I get this question a lot. Personally, I paid it for my patients. I felt that they were already in enough pain, why should they have to pay another couple hundred bucks on top of the fee they had to pay to become a patient and get their card.

We agreed (my patients and I) that I would build that into the cost of their medicine so I could gradually make it back. But I have spoke with a lot of caregivers that are making the patients pay.

What are your thoughts? I'd love to hear what people think the "norm" is (or should be).

I was told that If I as a patient paid, that I would receive my medicine for free. We haven't completed the process yet though, hopefully in the next few days.

Paying the caregiver fee does a couple of things. It means that the patient is vested in the caregiver and now expects a highly subsidized cost of care as a result. The caregiver hopefully does a good job and doesn't divert to an outside market of non patients, in order to pay for their 5 patients "FREE" care.
What we have found is that any qualified caregiver with the money for lighting equipment, an available facility, and ongoing money for electricity, nutrients etc... are not looking for patients to pay their application fees. Most patients that have been promised freebies are finding also their caregivers crops are "unsuccessful" or they are never able to reach them for their meds.
The best thing for a patient to do, is offer to assist with the trimming or labor aspects of production in any way, and your caregivers will be happy to work out a fair rate with you. There are less than enough caregivers for the state at the moment. In fact, only about 1 out 5 patients is averaging one at the moment due to high fees and a lack of organization.
